On September 26 there was a meeting of the Hughes Avenue Neighborhood Association at Fred and Pat Krueger's house. The meeting with the developer at the City Council Chambers was the topic of discussion. If you would like a copy of the videotape of that meeting, contact jim@rarebird.net.

This website and associated mailing list was discussed as a way for interested people to remain informed. It turns out that many people who thought they were subscribed to the mailing list were not, after all. So, please use the red "Join List" button on the home page to confirm your list membership. If you have anything for the website, send it to Roseland.Creek@OurNAMEis.COM (notice that that is a different address than the mailing list address!)

It was proposed that we hold the next meeting at Sondra's and make it a dessert pot-luck.

So, get connected by joining the list, and send us your ideas. We need all the help we can get!

Currently there are more outside observers subscribed to our list than affected residents!

Help us to change that around!

Dear Neighbors and Friends of Roseland,

In order for us to make a difference in our community  (which includes being heard by our elected officials) and to keep in contact with our neighbors, the members of the Hughes Avenue Neighborhood Association would like to invite you to a  Dessert Potluck & Letter Writing Social!

Knowing that finding the time to write letters to City Council or Editors of local newspapers is difficult, plus it is not always fun, we decided that getting together to support each other in putting together our thoughts, getting them down on paper should also include an immediate reward for our efforts- DESSERT!

(Not to down-play enjoying each other’s company, and making an impact in our community, too!)

Please join us on Sunday, October 24th at 7pm at the home of Fred and Patricia Kreuger. Their address is 1100 Hughes Ave . Be sure to bring a dessert to share, & bring a pen and paper. If you forget, we’ll have it available!

For more information you can call Sandra at 545-1663, or Fred at 573-3076.

Below is a list that combines numerous concerns brought up at previous H.A.N.A. meetings. For the Oct. 24th event, one of our main concerns is the plans for the 142 units being built across from Chelsea Gardens on Mc Minn Ave., and what impact it will have on the neighborhood. But, please don't feel any pressure to focus on this one issue. We encourage you to come to meet your neighbors, get informed, and share your wisdom! :)

Top Ten Issues Identified by the Neighborhood

1. Traffic is Increasing beyond the carrying capacity of neighborhood streets: As the Hwy 12 – Hwy 101 interchange becomes congested; traffic migrates in the afternoons to side streets, including McMinn, West, Dutton and Stony Point.

2. No Parks or youth facilities exist in the entire area of Roseland. In comparison, NE Santa Rosa has numerous parks and facilities.

3. Homelessness is growing throughout the area, particularly since the April closing of the SR City Armory for the homeless.

4. Gangs and Graffiti are increasing – even though in fairness the city is making some effort to abate graffiti.

5. Convicted Sex Offenders abound in the Roseland area – 78 according to the SRPD (out of 237 city wide). This is roughly triple what any other sector of Santa Rosa contains.

6. Ground Water is tainted, dropping and causing surface subsidence. This is due to a combination of over-drafting, city creek management policy plus paving and development; this results in foundation settling and the drying of Roseland Creek.

7. Neither Roseland nor the entire Southwest has a single elected representative in the City Council. The system is skewed against fair representation. Why is this condoned?

8. The City fails to listen to citizen requests. Many neighbors ask why several city council members vote to represent private interests more than citizens.

9. Open Space is decreasing and housing development increasing without checks on growth. This is crucial because we are exceeding the carrying capacity of the infrastructure of Roseland and the entire Southwest.

10. Neighborhood prostitution is increasing. This may be traffic forced off of Santa Rosa Avenue.

  Additional Issues Neighbors are also concerned about:
The increase in noise;
Few recreation opportunities for youth;
  Too many street peddlers;
Frequent police helicopter over-flights;
Residential speeding;
A growing fear at the rise in crime;
Poor management by out-of-town apartment owners.

Hello Folks. I will be at the Roseland meeting the 24th. We should deliver our letters to the City Council and Board of Supes on Tuesday the 26th and then also apear at the Roseland subcommittee on the 27th at the Board of Supervisors chambers at 9 am. I know this is difficult timing for people working but I will videotape our presentations and I am working to get others to bring forward inmportant information. We can also keep in mind I have brought forward some contacts willing to help us secure attornies for our fight against the Burbank Ave. EIR.

Has anyone heard anything about the Roseland Creek Concept Study that should be completed by now? Please give me write backs ASAP. Thanks for all of your GREAT work. See ya' soon. Duane D.
